How I approach Working With A Model In My Photography Studio

Updated: Sep 15

Photography for aspiring models - Bishop's Stortford photography studio

Working with models in my studio is a rewarding experience, but it requires careful planning to deliver professional, high-quality results. Whether the shoot is for a portfolio, commercial work, or personal branding, here’s everything I consider to ensure a successful session for both the model and myself.

1. Pre-Shoot Consultation

Communication is the foundation of a great shoot. Before any session, I always schedule a consultation to understand the model’s needs and the objectives of the shoot.

  • Purpose of the Shoot: I ask whether the model is building their portfolio or if the images are for a specific client, such as a fashion brand or commercial project.

  • Model’s Brand and Aesthetic: Understanding the model’s career goals helps me plan the shoot. For example, if they’re aiming for fashion, commercial, or fitness modeling, I can adjust the style and poses accordingly.

  • Mood Board/Shot List: I encourage the model or client to provide a mood board or reference images. This helps us align our expectations and plan the session effectively.

  • Wardrobe & Styling: I always discuss outfit options and provide guidance on styling. If needed, I can also recommend a stylist or makeup artist to help them look their best.

  • Comp Card Needs: If the model requires images for a comp card, I ensure we plan for headshots, full-body shots, and varied poses to suit the format.

2. Studio Preparation

Before the shoot, I make sure everything is ready in the studio to create a smooth workflow and allow the model to focus on the session.

  • Lighting Setup: I set up the lighting based on the shoot’s theme and goals. Clean, even lighting is essential for portfolio shots, but I also love experimenting with creative lighting for more editorial looks.

  • Backdrops: I have a variety of backdrops available—classic seamless white, black, gray, and more textured options to suit different styles.

  • Props and Furniture: I keep a range of props, benches, stools, and chairs in the studio to offer posing variety. These small additions can make a big difference in the final image.

  • Temperature and Comfort: I always ensure the studio is a comfortable temperature, especially as models may change into a variety of outfits. A comfortable model performs better, and it shows in the images.

  • Changing & Grooming Area: I provide a private room for my clients to change , refresh or take a break.

3. Posing and Direction

Guiding models through poses is part of what I do.

  • Demonstrate Poses: I’m not shy about demonstrating poses myself! It helps the model understand exactly what I’m envisioning for the shot.

  • Encourage Movement: I often encourage models to incorporate movement into their poses. Shifting weight, changing hand positions, and expressing a variety of emotions can bring life and energy to the images.

  • Focus on Body Language: Confidence comes through body language, so I work with the model to find relaxed yet strong poses that highlight their unique qualities.

  • Shoot Variety: I always capture a mix of headshots, 3/4 shots, and full-body images. Offering variety in poses and angles ensures the model has a versatile set of photos for their portfolio.

4. Communication and Comfort

I believe the energy and atmosphere of the studio greatly influence the outcome of a shoot. Making sure the model feels comfortable and confident is a top priority.

  • Positive Reinforcement: I keep the energy high with encouraging feedback throughout the shoot. Compliments and guidance help build confidence and ensure we’re both happy with the results.

  • Music and Atmosphere: I often play music in the background to help the model relax and get into the flow of the session. The right atmosphere makes a big difference.

  • Breaks and Hydration: I always make sure the model has water and we take breaks as needed, especially during long sessions. Keeping the model comfortable and refreshed helps keep the momentum going.

5. Technical Considerations

As a professional, I pay close attention to the technical aspects of the shoot to ensure that every image is flawless.

  • Camera Settings: I set my camera to suit the lighting and style of the shoot. Using the right shutter speed, aperture, and ISO settings ensures sharp, well-exposed images. I shoot with a medium Format Camera which ensures a high quality beautiful look to images. The FujiGFX50Sll is my main camera along with with a Nikon DSLR. Both deliver great quality images. I have a special adapter which allows me to shoot Nikon lenses on the GFX. Super cool as I can work with a large amount of Vintage and Modern Nikon lenses with this set up.

  • Lens Selection: I choose lenses that flatter the model and suit the shoot. I often use an 85mm or 105mm lens for portraits to create that beautiful, compressed background.

  • Lighting Adjustments: I’m always ready to tweak the lighting if necessary. Whether adding a reflector or adjusting a softbox. I work with a variety of lighting equipment. Flash, constant and a mixture of the two.

  • Monitor Images: I periodically review the images on a larger screen or a tethered setup to ensure focus, composition, and lighting are perfect.

6. Grooming and Makeup

I believe that professional grooming and makeup can make or break a shoot. If the model doesn’t have a professional makeup artist, I provide guidelines to help them prepare.

  • Hair and Makeup: I often recommend models work with a makeup artist or hairstylist who understands photography lighting. This ensures the makeup is camera-ready and enhances their natural features.

  • Touch-Ups During the Shoot: I keep a few basic touch-up items on hand, like powder and hairspray, for any quick fixes during the session.

7. Post-Production and Image Selection

Post-production is where the images come to life, and I take great care to ensure that each image is polished and professional.

  • Image Culling: I go through the shoot to select the strongest images that best represent the model. I focus on variety, quality, and range to give them a well-rounded selection.

  • Retouching: All my delivered images receive retouching to enhance skin tones, remove distractions, and ensure the overall image quality is at its best. I keep the editing subtle and natural, enhancing the model’s features without overdoing it.

  • Comp Card Design: If the model needs a comp card, I assist in selecting the right images for that format—headshots, full-body shots, and a variety of looks to show their versatility.

8. Delivering Final Images

The way I deliver the final images is an important part of the client experience.

  • File Format: I provide high-resolution images for print and optimized versions for digital use, ensuring the model has everything they need.

  • Gallery Delivery: I offer online galleries, making it easy for models to view and download their images. I also provide guidance on printing if needed.

  • Turnaround Time: I communicate clear timelines for image delivery, and I always strive to meet or exceed expectations.

9. Legal Considerations

Managing the legal aspects of a shoot is important for protecting both my work and the model’s rights.

  • Model Release: I ensure that every model signs a release form, giving me permission to use the images for marketing, portfolios, or other agreed-upon purposes.

  • Usage Rights: I clearly outline the usage rights for the images, specifying how and where they can be used, whether for personal or commercial purposes.

10. Building Relationships

I believe in building long-term relationships with the models I work with. A great experience often leads to future collaborations and referrals.

  • Follow-Up: After the shoot, I always check in to make sure the model is happy with their images. sePositive feedback or testimonials are always appreciated!

  • Stay Connected: I keep in touch with models for future shoots or updates. Models often need refreshed portfolios, and I want them to feel confident coming back to me for their next session.

By following these steps, I ensure every shoot is a success, and the model walks away with images that reflect their potential and professionalism. My goal is to create stunning, high-quality images that help models take their careers to the next level. The studio is cosy, private and based in Bishop's Stortford.
